You can expect your first treatment to take about an hour and a half. In order to determine your treatment plan, I gather information from the intake form you will be asked to fill out and additional questions I might ask. Plus I will feel the pulse on both wrists and look at your tongue. Much information about what is going on in the body can be determined by looking at the color and shape on the tongue body and tongue coating. The treatment plan I create will seek to address the underlying cause of a problem (what we call "root"), not just the symptoms. Subsequent treatments generally last about an hour.
The acupuncture needles are single-use, sterile, disposable needles. They are about the width of a cat whisker. The depth of insertion depends on the area being treated, but generally go in a half to one inch.
The average number of needles per treatment ranges from 12 to 20. After I have inserted all the needles, you will lie quietly for 25 - 30 minutes. Most people find the treatment to be very relaxing.
You are probably wondering how many treatments are necessary. This depends on how long the condition has been going on. Generally, chronic problems require more treatments than acute ones. Typically we know within 3 to 5 visits if acupuncture is going to be helpful to you. This is not to say the problem will be completely resolved within that time, but you should begin to feel better.
